The remarkable tale of Margaret Hamilton is one of the highlights of our Innovation Tour. Hamilton was Director of Software Engineering for NASA’s Apollo program. She and her team wrote the code that carried Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the moon and brought them home safely. We’ll tell you all about her accomplishments when you take the tour.

A long time ago, longer than I would care to admit, I was asked to develop a Christmas themed tour for a well-known Boston Tour organization. The tourism industry goes into a bearlike hibernation as soon as winter sets in, and my boss at the time wanted a reason to keep people interested in the brand at least through the winter. 

Anne Hutchinson, puritan, wife, mother, midwife and top notch rabble-rouser. If you’ve never heard of her, it’s not your fault, probably… Anyway, I don’t know if she quite fits the bill for 17th century “girl boss,” but if she does, she may have girl bossed just a little too hard, as her story ends with tragedy. But let’s start at the beginning.

Mercy Otis Warren has been called the most accomplished female mind of the American Revolution- so why isn’t she better remembered? To be sure, she isn’t entirely forgotten. She is well known and celebrated in certain circles, particularly in New England: her statue flanks the entry to the County Courthouse alongside that of her brother, James Otis Jr., in their hometown of Barnstable on Cape Cod. Indeed, the Cape Cod “Woman of the Year Award” is named after Mercy Otis Warren.

In September 2021, my husband and I were making our way back to Boston from a little trip to Vermont. We were meandering down route 7A, enjoying being in the mountains, appreciating the first glimpses of fall foliage, and both on the knife’s edge of hangry. We had been taking our time on the road, stopping here and there at bookstores and overlooks, with our eventual sites set on the town of Bennington.

In honor of Women’s Month, which is every March, it seemed like a good idea to highlight one of the most famous women from Massachusetts. Born in Oxford, MA in 1821 to a prosperous family of farmers, Clarissa Barton (better known as Clara) would go on to become one of the most celebrated women in the world for her efforts in medicine and her fiery passion for helping others in pain and need.

It’s time to start a blog. And since we’re on the verge of a massive change, going from Cambridge Historical Tours to becoming the Boston History Company (stay tuned), I thought I’d start at the beginning of Boston.
